Does it matter what type of glass you use for whisky?

If you like to taste, analyze and fully appreciate what you’re drinking, don’t ignore the glass. The type of glass you use will affect what you smell and taste.

A good whiskey tasting glass should be:

  • Clear and transparent: to allow for visual assessment of the whiskey.

  • Large enough to swirl: to release aromas.

  • Wide bowl: to allow aroma molecules to gather, but not so wide that it speeds up oxidation which diminishes aroma detection.

  • Narrow neck: to funnel aromas to the nose.

  • Thin enough to warm with your hand: but durable enough for bar use.

  • Attractive: because whiskey tasting is an aesthetic experience.

Until about twenty years ago, whiskey tasters were forced to live with the limitations of these glass types.

That is what motivated Raymond Davidson the founder of Glencairn Crystal, with input from master blenders, to design a glass specifically for whiskey that incorporated the advantages of the other glass styles while eliminating the disadvantages.

The Glencairn glass was designed specifically for whiskey tasting to overcome the limitations of other glass types. It has a unique shape that captures and concentrates aromas while allowing for visual assessment and comfortable swirling. Endorsed by industry professionals, it strikes the perfect balance between practicality, aesthetics, and aromatics, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced whiskey drinkers.
